Incense rooms have an alcove, (Tokonoma) where the host will make a display of some kind, usually a combination of a flower arrangement and piece of art, possibly calligraphy. Entering the room you visit this area and spend a small amount of time in appreciation of the care taken in the arrangement. A small detail can show great thoughtfulness. You may not notice all that went into it, but to pass it by thoughtlessly would be very rude. It will probably have elements of the season, and it may have something the Honored Guest is known to appreciate, a favorite flower, artist, or textile.
